My Best Tool for Productivity

I wrote a post a few days ago about my #1 Life Hack that set the tone for the entire day and allowed me to focus my morning mental ability towards what mattered. Setting the tone for the day is great, but if you don’t do anything with it you have squandered a perfect opportunity. We have all had this happen before:

  • Wake up in morning feeling great and motivated
  • Shower and dress
  • Sit down at the computer pumped to get s%*t done (work or home)
  • Then waist the time searching for things to do, reading email, or going down the social media rabbit hole

One 4×6 notecard can prevent that from happening again!

Much like you, I have a million things going on between work, family, and passion projects. If I am not careful I will end up being busy, not productive. To make sure that I am working on things that matter and have something to show for it, I create a 4×6 notecard the night before with the items that I need to accomplish the next day. The notecard has a short note and all info I need to get that task done like URL’s, phone numbers, or general direction. Only the things that are truly moving my business forward make it to the notecard.  I use this tool for productivity instead of an app etc, because I can slip the notecard in my pocket and it is dedicated to only one thing – MAKING ME FOCUS ON THINGS THAT MATTER!

For The Morning Hustlers:

One huge problem I have when working from 5-7am in the morning is that not everyone is awake. The quiet is very nice….. until you need to call someone! My solution was to create another Take Away notecard. This notecard contains a list of everyone I need to call that day for a project I am working on. I am always respectful of my company (full time job), so I only make these calls on my drive in (7-8am) when the East Coast is awake and on my drive home when the West Coast is still at work.  Having all information on these note cards makes it extremely easy for me to handle my business in 20 minutes during the drive.

For the Corporate Hustlers:

This is a perfect way to cut through the clutter from a normal to do list. The usual to do list has countless items of varying importance. It is way too easy to complete the easy stuff just to get it out of the way only to lose track of time and end the day not finishing anything that is important. This notecard is small enough to force you to cut the insignificant stuff out and focus on only 2-4 main items that are crucial to your success in the job.

Take Action Today

Grab a pack of old school notecards and write down the 3 items that you need to get done in the next 24 hours. The list should include the cliff notes version of exactly what you need to do to accomplish your goal for that day. Be concise and direct. Only things that matter should be on this card.
